I stopped for a couple of passengers the other day on the Upper West Side who announced with some enthusiasm that their destination was Carnegie Hall. I could see they were in a good mood, and this made me think they might be candidates for the oldest joke in the world.
So I fed them the line:
"How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"
They were right on it.
"Practice!" they called out in unison.
We remained at the curb for a few moments while I gave this some serious consideration.
Finally, as we pulled out into traffic, I said...
"Nah... I think I'll just take Broadway down to 57th Street and make a left."
